Wardens investigating two griz shootings

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks wardens are seeking information two recent grizzly bear shootings.

On May 4 during a monitoring flight, FWP grizzly bear management specialist Tim Manley located a collared male grizzly bear that was dragging its hind quarters.

Manley landed, and euthanized the bear, which was located near Wolf Creek Drive and Highway 83, near the Swan River. FWP game warden Chuck Bartos investigated, and a necropsy determined that the bear had been shot.

On May 16, FWP wardens investigated a dead grizzly bear in the Star Meadows area north of Whitefish near Sanko Creek. Initial investigation showed that the light colored bear died from a gunshot wound.

FWP is seeking information regarding these incidents. Anyone with any information is urged to call 1-800-TIP-MONT or game wardens Chris Crane at 249-6231 or Chuck Bartos at 253-2934. Callers can remain anonymous, and a reward may be available.
