The Columbia Falls girls track team took second in the May 17-18 Northwest Class A divisional tournament.

On Friday, sophomore Samantha Mundel ran away with the 1,600-meter title with a time of 5:27.72. On Saturday, she won the 3,200 at 11:59.42.

Carla Nicosia had an excellent meet, winning the triple jump with a leap of 35-5.75 and a high jump of 4-10. She also took third in the 100 meter hurdles at 17.04.

On the field, Andrea Getts won the discus with a throw of 98-4, and Haley Belgarde won the shot put with a throw of 34-6.5. The girls took second as a team.

The boys took third. Nakia Alexander won the triple jump with a 43-6.5 leap, and Ty Morgan won the javelin with a throw of 176-3. The boys 1,600 relay team of Mike Sandefer, Austin Kimmet, Josiah Osborne and Luke Kazlauskus also took top honors at 3:32.54.

All told, 12 girls and 12 boys qualified for the state meet this Friday and Saturday in Laurel.

“I’m really happy with our girls,” coach Jamie Heinz said. “I think we had personal records in every single event across the board.”

On the boys side, Heinz noted that while junior sprinter Josiah Osborne didn’t win his individual events, he ran his best times of the season and came close to breaking the school record in the 100. Whitefish runs well on its home track, Heinz noted, and Osborne has done well at previous state tournaments. Osborne tied for second in the 100 with a time of 11.29.

One note about Alexander — some newspapers have previously published he has the best leap in the long jump in Class A. That was a misprint, Heinz noted. Alexander has qualified just for the triple jump — quite an accomplishment, considering he just started the event about a month ago.
