Track teams run away with divisional titles

The motto for the Whitefish track and field team is the same every season — May matters. Coach Derek Schulz even has those two words embroidered on the back of his ball cap.

Their meaning is simple — everything leading up to this month is merely a warm up for the big show.

May is when there are no excuses. May is when medals are won on the podium, and sweat and tears are left on the track. May is when it matters.

The Bulldogs took those words to heart when they hosted last weekend’s Northwestern A divisional meet.

The Whitefish boys and girls swept the team titles, en route to qualifying for state at least one athlete in all but one event.

“We’ve never done that before,” Whitefish coach Derek Schulz said. “It’s almost unheard of.”

“We were ready to go.”

The Bulldogs finished with 236 points, far outpacing boys runner-up Frenchtown with 129. The Lady Dogs also won handily with 184 points. All total, 31 competitors from Whitefish earned a trip to the state meet.

Senior Logan Harwood led the Dogs with four victories in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 meter runs — a feat that is rarely seen in prep track.

“He has the speed to win the 100 and endurance to win the 800,” Schulz said.

On Friday, Sean Foley, Jed Nagler, Iaian Cameron and Harwood teamed up to win the 4x100 relay with a 43.38 — a time well below the state qualifying standard. Schulz says they’re within striking distance of the school record.

Keaton Grove cruised in the hurdle events, winning both the 110 and 300 races with personal-best times.

“He’s a gamer and hard worker,” Schulz said. “He just had an awesome meet. He’s tough.”

Jace Kalbfleisch won the 1,600 and 3,200 distance runs, working his position in the pack before pulling away on the final stretch.

The Schulz sisters piled up the points for the Lady Bulldogs.

Junior standout Marlow Schulz blazed the competition in the 100 and 400, while freshman Allie posted wins in the 200 sprint and 100 hurdles.

Allie qualified for state in five events.

Sarah Latcham came up big in the 800, winning with a 2:25.66, then took third in the 400.

“Sarah had her best meet of the year,” Schulz said.

Phoebe Guercio, Ella Kobelt, Sarah Craven, Marlow Schulz won the 1,600 relay with a 4:19.2.

Schulz noted Guercio’s outstanding weekend in the relays, hurdles, triple jump and long jump.

“She placed in everything she did,” Schulz said.

Schulz says both the boys and girls have good chances to rack up points at the state meet this weekend in Laurel.

“Both teams have to perform to place,” he said. “If we run our best, throw our best and jump our best, the results are what they are. Wining happens if you perform.”

The heavy favorite on the girls side are the defending champs from Corvallis.

The Bulldog boys are considered legitimate contenders for a state title, but will need critical points in the field, Schulz said.
