They saved their best for last.

Blake Weimer and Lars Gittings performed well at last week’s Class B-C state golf tournament, finishing seventh and eighth to earn all-state honors.

Weimer carded a 160, while Gittings came in one stroke behind him at 161.

“I peaked at the right time,” Weimer said Wednesday afternoon. “These were my two best rounds all year.” Weimer totaled an 80 both Tuesday and Wednesday, while Gittings carded a 79 and an 82.

Weimer said his group finished just before the rain started at the Eagle Bend golf course.

“There was a lot of wind today,” he said. “It made you think about where you were going to leave your shot.”

The tournament served as a successful completion of Weimer’s high school golfing. He qualified for the state tourney his freshman year and finished 14th his sophomore year. He missed the cut last year by one stroke.

“He had a good four-year career,” coach Steve Hullett said. Last year Weimer played well early and tailed off at the end. It was just the opposite this year, Hullett said.

“I was real proud to have him as a player and as a friend.”

Gittings placed 11th last year as a freshman, so his performance this year was an improvement.

“He’ll continue to progress,” Hullett said.
