Coram man charged with beating up girlfriend

A 23-year-old Coram faces two felony charges after he was arrested for allegedly beating up his girlfriend.

Nathan Sherman was arrested on Oct. 2 after deputies tracked him down to a gas station in Coram. His five-year-old daughter was in the vehicle with him.

According to court documents, a field test at the gas station determined Sherman’s blood alcohol content was 0.08, the legal limit for driving, but a second test at the county jail showed a 0.108 BAC.

Sherman’s girlfriend had called dispatch to report the alleged assault. She told deputies when they arrived that she and Sherman had been drinking and got into an altercation that turned physical.

She said Sherman pinned her to a wall, repeatedly struck her with a fist and head-butted her in the face when she said she’d call for help. A woman at the scene corroborated the girlfriend’s account.

Because Sherman has two prior convictions for partner-family member assault, he faces a felony charge of partner-family member assault with bodily injury. In convicted, he faces 30 days to five years confinement and a $500 to $50,000 fine.

He was also charged with felony criminal endangerment and faces up to 10 years and a $50,000 fine if convicted of that charge. Bail was set at $40,000. His next hearing is scheduled in February.
