Glacier Park climber rescued after falling into crevasse

A California man was airlifted from the Glacier National Park backcountry on Wednesday after sustaining injuries from a fall into a crevasse on the Jackson Glacier.

According to reports from backcountry campers, the 36-year old man fell about 30-40 feet into a crevasse on the glacier on the north side of Mount Jackson. He was reportedly able to climb out of the crevasse and hike about 2.5 miles to a backcountry campground at Gunsight Lake.

The campground is located about five miles from the Going-to-the-Sun Road east of Logan Pass.

Campers assisted the man and spent the night with him at the campground. Early Wednesday morning three campers hiked out to the Sun Road to notify park rangers of the accident victim.

Several other campers stayed with the injured man, who was unable to walk out due to his injuries.

A.L.E.R.T. Air Ambulance was called and responded to the scene at 10 a.m. and transported the man to medical facilities. The extent of injuries are unknown, but reported as not life threatening.

It is believed the man was hiking and climbing alone.

The Jackson Glacier is about 250 acres in size.
