The Columbia Falls track team had some strong performances in its first week of action after nearly a month of practice.

The team opened its season April 15 at the non-scoring Flathead Time Trials at Legends Field In Kalispell.

Samantha Mundel led the girls with a first-place finish in the 3,200 meters at 12:25.69. Ellie Johnson also had a great meet, with a second-place finish in the 100 at 13.76 and a fifth-place finish in the long jump at 15-1 1/4.

Carla Nicosia took third in the 100 meter hurdles at 17.18.4, and Emily Calderwood was fourth in the 400 meters at 1:05.01. Andrea Getts was third in the discus at 108-3.

On the boys side, Nakia Alexander won the triple jump at 42-11, Jared Trinastich took second in the javelin with a throw of 155-1, and Kodi Pletcher was sixth in the javelin at 140-0. Freshman Logan Stephens cleared 19 feet in the long jump, but just missed placing in his first track event.

On April 17, the girls took second in the Frenchtown Invitational. Mundel won the 3,200 at 12:36.2, Getts took the discus title with a throw of 117-4, Haley Belgarde won the shot put with a throw of 33-9, and Nicosia won the triple jump with a 36-7 1/4 — nearly a foot better than her third-place finish at the state track meet last year.

On the boys side, Alexander took the triple jump title again at 41-6 1/4 and was second in the long jump at 20 feet even.

All in all, coach Jamie Heinz said the team is a little bit behind because of spring break and the poor weather, but they’re getting there.

“Our girls team is pretty solid,” he said.

And while the boys aren’t always breaking into the scoring column, the team has a good attitude.

“We’re working hard, and we have a positive attitude,” Heinz said.

The team had a make-up meet for the snowed-out Iceberg Invitational on Tuesday at home. They then travel to the Top 10 meet in Missoula on April 29.
