Track teams endure soggy weather at local Invite

Well, at least it wasn’t snowing. Columbia Falls re-hosted the “Iceberg” Invite on April 12, after the meet in March was cancelled due to snow. This time around, it just rained — hard and often.

Despite the poor weather, the Columbia Falls girls took first against just three other schools — Polson, Whitefish and Browning — with 247.5 points. Polson was second with 171 points.

On the boys side, Whitefish took top honors with 214.5 points, and the Wildcats were second with 168.5 points.

The meet provided a good opportunity for younger athletes to get some reps in, but some veterans had good performances as well.

For the Kats, Carla Nicosia won the 100 meter hurdles at 16.97 and the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, 4 3/4 inches.

Samantha Mundel won the 1,600 meters in 5:35.47, and Haley Belgarde took the shot put with a throw of 34-5. Andrea Getts won the discus with a 105-2 throw.

For the Cats, Micah Sobczak won the high jump with a 5-10 leap, and Logan Stephens was second in the triple jump with a leap of 36-11.

The junior varsity team competed at the Libby Invitational on April 26. The girls scored 13 points to take seventh, and the boys had 38 points to take fifth.

The teams competed at the Missoula Top 10 meet in Missoula on Tuesday after presstime. The season takes a more serious turn this weekend with the Whitefish ARM meet on Saturday.
