Tough run for All-Stars at World Series
The Glacier All-Stars lost a third game on Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the Babe Ruth 13-and-under World Series in Glen Allen, Va.
The All-Stars lost 8-2 to the Southeast champions from Greenville, N.C. The All-Stars were overmatched by Greenville pitcher William O’Rear, who held the local team from Whitefish, Columbia Falls and Bigfork to three hits, zero runs and six strikeouts in five innings of work.
Behind that pitching, Greenville took an early lead and held an 8-0 advantage after O’Rear left the mound thanks to big innings in the first and third. They scored three runs in each inning, building a nearly insurmountable lead.
The All-Stars put up a short rally with two runs in the seventh inning, before recording their third out on a pickoff play at first base.
Coby Clark-Dickinson, who also started the game on the mound, went 2 for 4 from the plate, as did second baseman Jack Schwaiger, to lead the All-Stars at the plate. Schwaiger had the only RBI in the contest, scoring Austin Varner on a double in the seventh.
With the third loss, the All-Stars ended up tied with the New England champs from Waterford, Conn., for fourth place in the American division. The top three teams from each division advance, though neither the All-Stars nor Waterford can catch Greenville, now 2-2, in their final game of pool play.
The All-Stars will get a chance to end the tournament on a high note, playing Waterford at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20, in the last game for both teams.
In their second game, the Pacific Southwest Regional champions from Phoenix blasted the All-Stars 13-3 on Monday afternoon. Phoenix posted seven runs in the third frame to take a commanding 10-1 lead.
The All-Stars, the Pacific Northwest Regional champions, managed to scratch out runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. Coby Clark-Dickinson and Tanner Gove were 2-for-3 at the plate. Gove, Colten McPhee and Lee Walburn all hit doubles for the All-Stars.
In a pitchers dual on Sunday, the All-Stars dropped their opening game 3-1 to the Virginia state champs from Gainesville-Haymarket.
An RBI single from Walburn scored the All-Stars’ only run in the first inning. The All-Stars held a 1-0 edge heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when Gainesville-Haymarket tied it up with a run and followed with two more in the sixth.
Pitchers Walburn and Clark-Dickinson combined to hold Gainesville-Haymarket to just three hits. Walburn had both hits for the All-Stars, including a single in the seventh inning.
The Flathead-based team continued with pool play on Tuesday against Greenville, N.C.
