Wilderness quilt now on display

Spotted Bear District Ranger Deb Mucklow and 90 other quilters have created a quilt commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Wilderness Act. Each person created a patch for the large quilt on an arrowhead design.

“It shows the passion people have for wilderness,” Mucklow said last week.

The quilt took four to five months to put together and features a variety of different patches, from men and women alike. Some patches have quotes from authors like John Muir or John Steinbeck; others have pictures or lyrics from songs.

“It was cool to get 90 folks to return a square,” Mucklow said.

Selena Beckwith did the final quilting once the patches were sewn together.

The quilt will be on display at the Spotted Bear Ranger Station at the south end of the Hungry Horse Reservoir and later this year at the Hungry Horse Ranger Station.
