Daines deserves credit

As a hunter, I know the value of protecting the best wildlife habitat. As a Montanan, I know it’s essential that we put aside ideology and work together to get things done.

That’s why I was impressed that Rep. Steve Daines worked with Sens. Jon Tester and John Walsh to get both the Rocky Mountain Front Heritage Act and North Fork Watershed Protection Act across the finish line this Congress.

The package of land bills that came through had lots of conservation proposals throughout the West while also increasing the potential for resource development in a lot of areas. It’s called compromise, and it’s something we need more of in this country.

The bill easily could have left out these two key Montana conservation measures. Both are spectacular places that teem with wildlife. They’re part of our national heritage. And they offer excellent backcountry hunting, hiking and wildlife watching.

These are the national treasures that should be set aside for future generations. In addition, these are bills that were hammered out by Montanans over many years.

Daines has been sharply criticized by some for supporting additional wilderness acres. But I, for one, am glad he was willing to take a stand for what’s right and protect these stunning landscapes.
