Matcats take Northwest A crown

The Columbia Falls wrestling team took home its second straight Northwest Class A division title last week, as seven MatCats brought home individual titles.

Mason Fetters (113), Kaleb Gravelin (120), Shonn Roberts (126), Haze Bell (132), Bryan Shaffer (152), Cody Walters (160) and Spencer Ross (heavyweight) all won individual titles in the Feb. 8 tournament in Libby.

Roberts, a junior, won his third Northwest A crown and remains undefeated on the season. He’s on pace to break the Columbia Falls High School consecutive-win record set by Caleb Schaeffer. He could also break the school’s fall record.

Manny Guzman (98), Winfield West (106), Zayne Brunz (145) and Ike Schweikert (182) all took second. Wyatt Green (132) and Colton Gove, (138) and Mikey Dennison (220) had third-place finishes. Gove beat his own teammate, Chase Ramberg, for third place. Jason Williams (170) and Andrew Burgess (195) took fourth.

The team will travel to Billings this week for the state Class A tournament. The team hopes to bring home some hardware. Roberts will look for his third straight state title as well.

The MatCats went 22-2 in duals this season. The only two teams they lost to — Sidney and Havre — are the teams to beat at state.

The MatCats qualified 17 wrestlers for the state tournament.

Wrestling will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the MetraPark Arena in Billings.
