Sun Road now open but could be hazardous
The full 50-mile length of Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road is now open to motor vehicles, but drivers need to be aware of potential hazards from falling rock and snow.
Park staff responded to a fallen boulder on the Sun Road late Wednesday night, the evening the Sun Road opened to vehicles. The gates on the Sun Road were opened just after 8 p.m. on July 2.
Park dispatch received a report around 10:30 p.m. of a large pile of snow and a very large boulder blocking the west-bound lane of the Sun Road about 1.5 miles west of Logan Pass. No injuries or damage were reported.
Road crew members removed the snow and boulder by 1:30 a.m. this morning. The boulder was estimated to weigh about 800 pounds.
Travelers along the road are reminded to drive with care. Standing or walking on snow along the Sun Road is strongly discouraged, as is parking or stopping in areas where snow remains above the road.
