Logan Pass water system temporarily down

Visitors to Glacier National Park’s Logan Pass are advised to bring their own water or refillable water bottle this week while temporary water tanks are installed.

The water system at Logan Pass was scheduled to be shut down July 22 at about 5 p.m. The temporary system is expected to be operating by the weekend.

Park personnel will provide large water bottles in the parking area for visitors to fill their personal water bottles. The public restroom facilities will remain operational.

The 13,600-gallon water tank that provides drinking water to Logan Pass was installed in 1964. The tank’s interior and exterior surfaces need to be sandblasted and coated this summer and fall. During this time, two temporary tanks will provide drinking water to the visitor center.

The two temporary 5,000-gallon tanks were transported to Logan Pass on the Going-to-the-Sun Road and then air-lifted about half a mile northwest of the visitor center. The project is expected to be completed this fall, and the temporary tanks will be removed at that time.

The work will be conducted in compliance with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and U.S. Public Health Service.
