Citizen science

The Crown of the Continent Research Learning Center at Glacier National Park will hold training for its High Country Citizen Science program on Friday, June 13, or Friday, June 27. Participants will observe mountain goats, bighorn sheep and pika behavior at selected sites to assist with population and distribution estimates. The training date for the Common Loon Citizen Science project is Thursday, June 19. Glacier Youth Corps

Applications are being taken from Montana students, ages 15-17, interested in working in Glacier National Park under the Glacier Youth Corps program from June 15 to July 11, or July 20 to Aug. 15. The four-week program provides a hands-on conservation opportunity with duties such as fencing, trail maintenance, habitat restoration and revegetation, while living and learning in the Park. The program is a partnership of the Glacier National Park Conservancy, Montana Conservation Corps, the National Park Foundation and the National Park Service. Outdoor classes

The Glacier Institute will offer classes on wildflowers and loons in June. Steve Wirt will teach about “Orchids: Glacier’s Precious Beauties” on Friday, June 13, Ellen Horowitz will lead a course on “Spring Wildflowers” on Saturday, June 14, and Denny Olson will teach about “The Uncommon Loon” on Saturday, June 14. Birding class

The Glacier Institute will offer a class on “Birding By Ear” in Glacier National Park taught by Denny Olson, a professional teaching naturalist for more than 30 years, on Friday through Sunday, June 20-22. Park raptors

The Glacier Institute will offer a course on “Glacier Birds of Prey: East Side” on Thursday, June 19. The course will cover life histories, habits, physical characteristics, distribution and management policies of all 29 species of birds of prey found in the Park, focusing on bald eagles.
