Fairground renovations now underway

Renovation of the nearly 90-year-old grandstand building at the Flathead County Fairgrounds is underway.

The work includes new roofing on all three levels, fresh paint on metal supports and understructure, new LED lighting with an emergency back-up system and more seating for guests requiring ambulatory assistance.

The total project budget of nearly $250,000 will be paid with Flathead County capital improvement funds. Outback Construction of Missoula is the primary contractor, with architectural work by ADG of Kalispell.

Construction is also taking place on the southern section of the fairgrounds, with upgrades to and relocation of water, sewer, storm drainage and utilities. The contract to low bidder LHC is for $324,505, with engineering work done by Carver Engineering.

“Many of these lines are 60 to 70 years old in addition to not being in the best location for improving the grounds,” fairgrounds manager Mark Campbell said. “We appreciate everybody’s patience and understanding during the construction phase.”

Both projects will be completed before the start of the 2014 Northwest Montana Fair and Rodeo and represent the first of a three-phase renovation plan to be carried out over several years.

Fairgoers will also notice improvements to the entrance of the rabbit and poultry barn thanks to the efforts of the Dandy Dudes and Dolls 4-H Club. Last year, the club’s volunteer efforts spruced up the entrance to the floriculture building.

The 2014 Northwest Montana Fair and Rodeo will be held Aug. 12-17 with outdoor concerts, a PRCA rodeo and a demolition derby. Tickets are available online at www.nwmtfair or at the fairgrounds office.
