June weather breaks rainfall records

It might not have rained as hard as it did in June 1964, creating a 500-year flood marking its 50th anniversary this year, but this past week’s low pressure system set a number of records for rainfall in the Flathead Valley.

• Total rainfall on Tuesday, June 17, was 1.74 inches, a new record for June 17.

• Total rainfall on Wednesday, June 18, was 1.16 inches, breaking the old mark for June 18 of 0.78 inches set in 1939 .

• The 2.9 inches of rain that fell those two days brought total rainfall in June to 4.48 inches, as measured at Glacier Park International Airport.

• So far this year, the Flathead Valley has received 12.13 inches of precipitation, which is 3.9 inches above normal.

• Through Thursday, June 19, a total of 3.88 inches of rain fell on Creston, 2.61 in Hungry Horse and 3.24 in Swan Lake.

• In Glacier Park, rainfall through Thursday totaled 3.04 inches in West Glacier, 5.6 in the Many Glacier area, 7.38 in Goat Haunt, 6.14 in St. Mary.

The low pressure system moved out of Northwest Montana on Thursday, leaving behind warmer and drier weather.
