Sun Road now open for cars to Avalanche Creek

Motorists can now travel on Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road to Avalanche Creek.

The opening will make it easier to hike and bike into the Park’s popular high country along the road. Park officials caution visitors about avalanche danger, particularly in the high country.

During the week when plows are working, hikers and bikers can travel as far as Packer’s Roost. But there are no restrictions after 6 p.m. and on weekends.

Snowplow crews working on the Sun Road west of the Continental Divide are currently at Road Camp, about 5.5 miles west of Logan Pass, not far from Haystack Creek and the Bird Woman Falls Overlook. Plows were encountering snow depths between 10 and 15 feet.

Other Park roads that are currently open to vehicles include the Many Glacier, Two Medicine and the Camas roads.

Many trails in Glacier are still covered with snow, but lower-elevation trails are slowly becoming snow-free. The snowpack continues to be well above average for this time of year. In the Flathead River Basin, the snowpack is 144 percent of average.
