Kats take second in NW division, boys third

The Columbia Falls girls track team rose to the occasion at the Northwest Class A divisional track meet in Frenchtown, taking second. The boys took third.

The Wildkats had several first-place finishes in the May 23-24 event. Carla Nicosia was the champion in the triple jump with a leap of 35-4.75 and the 100 meter hurdles at 15.66, her best time of the season.

Andrea Getts won the discus with a throw of 115-10. Samantha Mundel won both the 3,200 meters at 12:10.06, and the 1,600 meters at 5:24.24. Mundel’s mark broke the school record in the event by about two seconds.

Haley Belgarde took honors in the shot put with a 33-10 throw.

On the boys side, Nakia Alexander won the triple jump with a leap of 43-5.25, and James Ratzlaff won the 1,600 at 4:45.62. Mike Sandefer, Ratzlaff, Ty Morgan and Josiah Osborne won the 1,600 meter relay at 3:33.86.

The top five placers in each event go on to the state tournament in Butte this Friday and Saturday. The teams have the potential to bring home several individual state championships.

As expected, Whitefish swept both team titles in the divisional tournament.
