Reservoir rental cabin proposed
The Flathead National Forest is seeking comments for a proposal to add the Anna Creek Cabin to the Forest’s cabin rental program.
The Anna Creek Cabin is located on the West Side Hungry Horse Reservoir Road about 22 miles south of the Hungry Horse Dam.
This would be the first cabin in the Flathead Forest program located in the Hungry Horse Reservoir area. Most uses in the area are recreational, including hiking, biking, pleasure driving, boating, huckleberry picking, hunting, snowmobiling and firewood cutting.
The Anna Creek Cabin is next to the West Side Hungry Horse Reservoir Road. Access is seasonal because the road is not plowed, but it can be accessed by snowmobiles. The proposal is to open the cabin to rentals from June 1 through Oct. 31 and Dec. 1 through March 31.
The Anna Creek Work Center was constructed in 1953 and used for administrative functions from 1953 into the 1990s. The Anna Creek Work Center was determined not to be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010, and all the buildings at the site were demolished except for the main cabin and a generator shed.
The Flathead Forest cabin rental program began in 1991. Scoping for this proposal began in 2010 but stalled due to personnel changes. The proposal remains the same, but additional scoping is being conducted to be sure if all environmental, social and other issues have been addressed.
