A football star in Texas and a Glacier National Park mountain climber in the summer — Abe Willows is really making a name for himself at Lake Travis High School.

Jim Willows, who owns Willows Huckland in Hungry Horse, said his son ran for 230 yards on Sept. 28. The 5-foot 10-inch, 180-pound junior had 155 yards rushing and 110 yards receiving in the opening game of the season.

The high school in Lake Travis, a suburb of Austin, has more than 3,000 students and has been the Texas state champion in football five times. The Cavaliers compete at the 4A level.

Abe returns to the Flathead each summer and works at his father’s store and restaurant. Jim said they climbed Mount Reynolds in Glacier Park last year and hiked from Logan Pass to Waterton Lakes National Park in 2012.

“For exercise, he runs for 16 minutes up the Columbia Mountain trail and back again,” Jim said.
