Playhouse is 'groovin' on Sundays
The Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts Foundation is offering its own version of “Groovin’ on a Sunday afternoon” with musical experiences during the off-season at the center, beginning Oct. 12.
The Center’s lobby will be the venue for the event, providing a more intimate setting for this social event. The expansion of the lobby in 2009 included a curved glass facade facing Electric Avenue, with shimmering colored tiles on the pillars and Tiffany-style lighting, creating an elegant setting for special events.
The musical experiences will feature local musicians and are slated on Sunday afternoons starting at 2 p.m. Oct. 12, Nov. 16, Jan. 11 and Feb. 8. The $15 ticket price includes live music, a glass of champagne and massages to make the afternoon even more relaxing. Food and beverage will also be available for purchase.
Each concert has a sponsor and a non-profit beneficiary for a percentage of ticket sales, which will include Groove Trail, Flathead Community Foundation, Imagine IF Libraries and Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts. The first event is sponsored by Bridge Street Cottages.
The musical events are in step with the Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts Foundation goal to help make Bigfork a year-round destination, spokesperson Kay Bjork said. “The BCPA off-season is off to a great start this year with the recent performances of Peter Pan by the Bigfork Playhouse Children’s Theater, “A Tribute to Antonio Jobim” night of Brazilian music, and the premier “Groovin on a Sunday Afternoon’” series,” Bjork said.
The Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts is the result of monumental community effort and a mission “to sponsor, support and nurture the performing arts and to maintain a venue where quality performances are presented” and to provide a Bigfork home for the performing arts all year, Bjork said.
The foundation recently raised enough money to add a new sound system and is working toward other improvements in the 26-year-old building, including new lights and light board, dressing up the house and exploring the possibility of equipment to host film events.
The kick-off for the “Groovin’ on a Sunday Afternoon” features Donny & Kleist with a varied repertoire of songs – from Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder. Don Caverly is a native of Columbia Falls and is a graduate of the University of Idaho Lionel Hampton School of Music. Erica von Kleist recently moved to Montana after living in New York City for 12 years and has toured and/or performed with numerous notable musicians such as Wynton Marsalis and Kristen Chenoweth.
