Scout project puts color, geography on school playground

Students at Bigfork Elementary School now have a new learning resource right on their school playground. 

For several months Dalin Livingston, 14 year old Boy Scout, has been working with Principal Brenda Clarke on completing his Eagle Project at the elementary school.  Dalin requested permission to paint a 16’ x 27’ colorful map of the United States on the playground.  Permission was given and the planning began.

Part of the Eagle Scout requirement is that the Scout demonstrate and learn leadership skills while performing a service project that benefits his community.  Dalin was able to develop these skills as he planned and proceeded with leading 20 volunteers of family, friends and fellow scout members from Troop 1943, to complete his project.  The project took approximately 2 weeks and required over 90 man hours.

The map was painted in bright primary colors using concrete paint that was generously donated by Joe Marshall at Sherwin Williams paint. This colorful map can be used for many learning activities, such as geography, science, history and economy.  Principal Clarke said she was very pleased with the turn out of the map and congratulated Dalin on the skills he developed while organizing the project.
