Fall prescribed burns planned

Flathead National Forest officials plan to conduct prescribed fire projects this fall when weather, fuel conditions and air quality become favorable. Burning is expected to start in mid-September and continue through Nov. 30.

Projects include:

• The 1,362-acre Paint Emery prescribed burns on the east side of the Hungry Horse Reservoir near Great Northern Mountain are part of a wildlife habitat enhancement project.

• The 295-acre Firefighter Mountain project on the east side of the Hungry Horse Reservoir on and adjacent to Firefighter Mountain is expected to restore and enhance grass and shrub for foraging wildlife and help curb wildland fire.

• A 12-acre burn near Spotted Bear Lake is intended to reduce hazardous fuels and improve winter range habitat.

• The 153-acre Horse Ridge near Spotted Bear is aimed at reducing hazardous fuels and improving winter range habitat.

• The 416-acre Soldier Addition burn near the Gorge Creek trail head is expected to improve winter range habitat.

• Piles within the Tin Mule project area west of the South Fork River near Kah Mountain will be burned.
