CSKT water compact events slated

Two events are scheduled this month to help the public learn about the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes’ proposed water compact.

• Keynote speaker Elaine Willman will join Montana state legislators and other panelists for a discussion on “Waters and Lands of Montana, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” at the Hilton Garden Inn, in Kalispell, on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Sponsored by the Freedom Action Rally, the panelists will discuss state, federal and tribal water laws. Reservations are needed. For more information, call 837-6929 or 837-1266.

• The Montana Water Stewards and the Montana Farmers Union will host a round-table discussion about the proposed water compact at the Northwest Fairgrounds Expo Building, in Kalispell, on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

There will be updates on the draft agreement and talk about impacts to irrigators, farmers and ranchers on the Flathead Indian Reservation and across Montana. Lunch is $10. RSVP by Sept. 15 by e-mailing montanawaterstewards@gmail.com.
