Forest Service plans to remove hazard trees at Lost Johnny Point

The Hungry Horse Ranger District is seeking comments for a plan to remove hazard trees at the Lost Johnny Point Campground.

The popular site on the west side of the Hungry Horse Reservoir offers 21 camp sites on about 23 acres. About 13 acres will be affected by the work.

A hazard tree fell and hit an RV at Lost Johnny Point in 2013. No one was injured. Forest Service insect and disease specialists sent to the site discovered that most of the Douglas firs and subalpine firs were affected by Armillaria root disease.

The disease weakens root systems and makes conifers susceptible to being toppled by wind. The specialists recommended removing additional hazard trees.

The plan calls for removing identified hazard trees that are within 1 1/2 tree lengths of developed camp sites, roads, facilities and travel routes. Work would begin in June and be completed by mid-July.
