Bigfork High School senior Josh Sandry signed a letter of intent last Wednesday morning, officially committing to play football at the University of Montana in Missoula.

Sandry verbally committed to play at the university in August, after attending a football camp in Missoula in June.

Sandry received a full-ride scholarship to play for the Griz.

“It couldn’t happen to a better kid,” Bigfork football coach Todd Emslie said. “He works so hard. It makes the Grizzly football team better with Josh on it. They don’t come around to every average kid, it’s earned.”

Sandry is the first Bigfork football player since Chuck Mason to receive a full ride for football. Mason played for the Griz from 1989 through the 1993-94 season.

Mason came to the signing event at the school on Wednesday to support Sandry. Mason said he is thrilled to see another Bigfork athlete go to the Griz. “Josh is probably one of the best athletes I’ve ever seen come out of this school,” Mason said. “Coming from a class B school it’s not easy to get a scholarship at that level.”

Sandry will carry on a bit of a family legacy with the Grizzlies. His grandfather played football for the school and his great-grandfather helped coach the team.

“I grew up going to Griz games,” Sandry said. He is looking forward to, “getting to suit up in Griz gear and represent Montana.”

Sandry was the quarterback, safety, kicker, kick returner and punter for Bigfork. He was an all-state selection at safety and quarterback.
