Deal made with man who pointed gun at daughter
The Flathead County Attorney’s Office gave a 63-year-old Martin City man a three-year deferred prosecution agreement on Jan. 7 after he was charged with pointing a loaded gun at his daughter in 2013.
Edmon Shumpert had faced up to 20 years in prison and a $50,000 fine if convicted of felony assault with a weapon.
According to court records, Shumpert’s two daughters went to his home in Martin City on July 9 and found him intoxicated and agitated. They tried to calm him down, but when they tried to take away his beer, he grew even more agitated and allegedly pointed a gun at one of the daughters.
The daughters told sheriff’s deputies who responded that Shumpert said he didn’t care if she was his daughter, he would shoot her.
Shumpert allegedly admitted to deputies that he drank eight beers before the incident. The deputies found the firearm, which had one round in the chamber and five in the magazine.
