MatCats win two duals at home, one away

Columbia Falls wrestlers won two home duals and one away last week as the team has one more week of wrestling before the postseason begins.

The MatCats beat Polson 45-28 and Libby 58-15 at home on Jan. 23 and Frenchtown 32-27 in an away dual on Jan. 22.

Colton Sweeney (145), Wyatt Green (152), Storm Kemppainen (160), Spencer Ross (285), Haze Bell (126) and Shonn Roberts (138) all recorded pins in the match against Polson. The Pirates had three pins and one major decision. Both teams had a forfeit.

Austin Nelson (103), Ben Windauer (120), Kaleb Gravelin (132), Roberts, and Colton Gove (145) all had pins against the Greenchain. The Loggers gave up three forfeits.

Dale Meyer (182) had the lone fall for the MatCats against the Broncs in Frenchtown.

All three matches featured a blend of junior varsity and varsity wrestlers as the team looks to qualify as many wrestlers as it can for the state tournament.

Coach Jessie Schaeffer said the goal is wrestlers in all the available weight classes, plus alternates, which is 17 wrestlers.

The MatCats are on the road for the Whitefish duals Friday. Matches start at 1 p.m. Frenchtown, Browning, Eureka, Bigfork and Whitefish will all compete.
