Community players to host acting workshop

Some people are born with a talent to act and can realistically portray a character on stage or on camera, relying only on their natural talent.

But the vast majority, for whom this skill is not part of their innate repertoire, can learn how to do it.  And everyone who does it, naturally or as a result of training, can learn to do it better.  That’s why the Bigfork Community Players  are hosting an acting workshop this summer; to help everyone who’s interested to become a better actor.

The Bigfork Community Players, Bigfork’s adult theater company, wants to give everyone a chance to act and receive feedback. In a relatively low-risk, low-key, low-commitment environment, participants will have the opportunity to select and perform one or more scenes from several plays, including plays slotted for production this year and those under consideration for future production. The workshop will meet twice a month from 7-9 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. The first workshop, June 10, will be held in the lower-level ballroom at the Marina Cay Resort.

The first meeting will introduce a small collection of plays and scenes and participants will have the opportunity to be paired with a partner or partners to learn a scene for performance at a later date.  They will also watch and provide suggestions on one scene prepared by the organizers, similar to the scenes that they may later perform.  Finally, one or more Bigfork Community Players directors will talk about what they look for when casting a play, what it’s like to audition and be in a play, and what their perspectives are regarding the details of acting including learning lines, developing a character, and projecting to the last row.  If time permits, the session may include a few impromptu acting exercises to introduce participants to the stage.  Participants may choose to just watch; active participation is not required.

Successive meetings will be devoted to additional impromptu exercises, performance and critiques of prepared scenes, and occasional presentations on specific concepts or skills in acting. The purpose of these workshops is to develop the acting skills of members of the Bigfork Community Players, both seasoned and new actors.  The sessions will also serve to provide Bigfork Community Players directors with more opportunities to see actors than is possible in a single audition.  Finally, these sessions may help the Bigfork Community Players select which plays to produce.

The workshops are free to all members of the Bigfork Community Players.  Anyone can become a member of the Players by paying the membership fee of $10.
