Glacier Park road plowing starts soon
Glacier National Park crews will begin plowing roads starting April 1. On the west side, the Park will start with the Camas Road and then move on to the Going-to-the Sun Road, Park spokeswoman Denise Germann said.
On the east side, crews will plow the Chief Mountain Road, drop down to Many Glacier and then begin plowing the Sun Road from St. Mary to Rising Sun.
There isn’t much snow in the Park’s lower elevations, and several miles of the Camas Road has already melted out. East-side roads also have little or no snow.
Plowed roads will not be opened right away to vehicle traffic. The Many Glacier Road won’t open to vehicles until late April for wildlife security reasons.
The Sun Road on the west side typically is opened to vehicles as far as Avalanche Creek when the parking lots there are clear of snow. Hikers and bikers will also see restrictions when plow crews are working on roads.
Germann noted that while some Park roads are clear of snow, they are managed as trails until April 1. No bicycling is allowed until after that date.
