Kats take Northwest A track crown

The Columbia Falls girls won the Northwest Class A divisional title in Libby on May 15-16 with several top performances.

Senior Samantha Mundel won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs, Allyson Gimbel won the shot put, Ellie Johnson won the discus, and Carla Nicosia won the 100 hurdles and the triple jump.

Mundel, a senior, had times of 2:23.37, 5:11.08 and 11:10.80 in her three wins. She holds the school record now in all three races and plans to run for Carroll College in the fall.

Nicosia, also a senior, had a great weekend. She had a 15.76 in the 100 hurdles and her triple jump of 37-1/4 ties her best mark of the season.

Johnson’s discus throw was 108-11 1/2 . Gimbel’s shot put throw of 36-11 1/2 could put her on the podium at state if she can repeat the feat.

The Kats also won the 1,600 relay, with Keavyn Baker, Hannah Gedlaman, Kiara Burlage and Miranda Livingston finishing in 4:06.87.

The top five placers in each event qualify for the state tournament. The Kats will have great momentum going into the state tournament this Friday and Saturday in Laurel, where they’ll try to knock off favored Corvallis for a state Class A crown.

The boys took third in Libby. Stephen Lindsey won the long jump with a leap of 19-11, and Nathan Riley won the triple jump with a 42-5 1/2 leap.
