Students to visit Europe on history trip
Over spring break, 12 Bigfork High School students will have the experience of a lifetime.
The students are going on a history trip to Greece and Italy.
While other classes have gone abroad in the past, world history teacher Stormy Taylor said this will be the first time the history department has done a trip like this.
Taylor heard trips like this could be a possibility, and thought it would be a great way to really help the students understand the history they’ve learned in class.
“It’s fun to teach, but I thought to myself wouldn’t it be fun to take a group of kids there,” Taylor said.
The trip is through Education First tours and will take the students to Athens, Florence and Rome.
They will visit the Parthenon, the first Olympic stadium, the Colosseum, visit an Italian leather workshop and more.
Taylor hopes the trip will expose students to new culture, and allow them to take what they’ve learned in class, and see it in real life.
For most of the students, and Taylor it will be their first trip abroad.
“I just want to see the history and just to experience that,” Taylor said. “This is going to change these kids’ lives to be able to experience another culture. This is just going to be something they always remember. The impact is going to be huge on them.”
The trip costs about $3,400 per person, including airfare, museum visits, accommodation and meals.
Students began fundraising almost a year out from the trip, and are still working hard to fund their adventure.
They are selling raffle tickets for a $500 Wal-mart gift card.
They also have a “Taste of the Mediterranean” fundraiser coming up on Nov. 19 from 5- 7 p.m. at the Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts. The event will feature tapas and wine tasting. Tickets are $25 or $125 to reserve a table of 6, and can be purchased at the Jug Tree. For more information on the Taste of the Mediterranean contact Tara Hoveland at 250-9052.
