TRACK & FIELD: Fast times at Flathead Mini
The sunshine and warm temperatures of the last week never showed up, but it didn’t slow down the athletes at the Flathead Mini Invite on Tuesday, with 13 boys and 12 girls setting qualifying marks or bettering their marks from earlier this month.
The Flathead distance runners shined at the non-scoring meet, winning two of the three boys and girls events while five athletes marked a state time.
Braves senior Jake Perrin returned to Treasure State competition from his fast performance at the Arcadia Invitational in California with a speedy performance in the 800, winning with a time of 2 minutes, 0.71 seconds to mark the second-best time in the state this season. The Braves took the top three spots in the events as Perrin broke away from the pack in the final 200 meters.
Jacob Calles, who finished third in the 800, set a state qualifying mark in the 1,600, winning the race in a time of 4:32.59. Ben Perrin finished second in the 3,200, setting a qualifying mark in 10:00.45, finishing only behind Bigfork’s Logan Morley, who ran the race in 9:42.99, the fastest time run in the state this season.
On the girls side, Flathead’s Gillian Maness set a state qualifying time of 5:14.53 in winning the 1,600 at the meet, beating two other girls that set state marks, Glacier’s Bailey Smith and Bigfork’s Anya Young.
Flathead’s Kaitlin Wride won the 3,200 with ease, in 11:50.72, besting Young, who topped her previous best time this season by more than six seconds.
Also in her return from Arcadia, Glacier sophomore Annie Hill won the 800 in 2:14.37, the second fastest time in the state this season.
“It went good,” Hill said. “It was my first 800 of the season. It’s a good starting point.”
Glacier’s Aaron Robinson won the boys 110 and 300 hurdles and the long jump, setting state qualifying marks in the 110 hurdles and long jump. Polsn’s Jacob Clairmont, who set qualifying marks while finishing second in each of the hurdles races, also set a season best to win the pole vault, clearing 13 feet, 6 inches.
Eureka’s Owen Davis (shot put) and Isaac Sturdeveant (discus) set qualifying marks in winning their respective events, as did the Lions’ Lucas Blankers, who finished second in the triple jump. Logan Kolodejcuk of Columbia Falls won the triple jump with a state mark of 42-5.25.
Whitefish’s Luke May (javelin) and Sawyer Silliker (high jump) each set new season bests in winning their events.
Bigfork had a parade of winners in the girls’ sprints, with Haile Norred winning both the 100 and 200 and Mattison McAnally the two hurdles events, setting a season best time of 46.93 in the 300 hurdles.
Glacier’s Nikki Krueger (shot put) and Taylor Salonen (triple jump) each set new qualifying marks in event wins, as did Columbia Falls’ Ellie Johnson (discus) and Ashley Caffrey (pole vault). The Wildkats’ Allyson Gimbel finished second in the shot put, but set a qualifying mark with a toss of 34-9.5.
Flathead’s Madde Boles set a new season best winning the high jump by clearing 5-2. Glacier’s 1,600 relay team also qualified for state.
