Strong start for Glacier boys

| April 1, 2017 11:28 PM

The Daily Inter Lake

Flathead and Glacier opened the Class AA tennis season hosting Great Falls High and C.M. Russell on Saturday at Flathead Valley Community College.

Flathead’s boys came up short in both duals, losing 5-2 and 5-1 to Great Falls and CMR, respectively, while the FHS girls lost 6-2 and 8-0.

“A very young team,” Flathead coach Sue Corrigan said.

“We had a lot of doubles players who were playing singles.”

The Glacier boys tied CMR 4-4 and stomped Great Falls High 7-1 while the Glacier girls lost 8-0 and 6-2, respectively.

“Overall, for the whole team, boys and girls we played well,” Glacier coach Josh Munro said.

“We were missing ... I don’t know how many kids for spring break. We had 30 of the 100 kids in town. These kids did really well. Kids playing for third and fourth positions were playing at one and two. And for a ton of kids, this was their first match of any kind ever.”

Eight matches for Glacier on the day went to a third-set tie-breaker. There were 12 tie-breakers overall.

“The fact we were competing against schools that had their full lineup was impressive,” Munro said.

He said Holland Blalack, at No. 1 singles, “had a great day. Winning that CMR match against Roy (Munns) was a good start. He played some tough matches today. I was real impressed with his play all the way around.”

Blalack beat Munns 6-7 (3), 6-4, 1-0 (8).

All of Flathead’s wins were in singles — Will Taylor-Lewellen versus Great Falls High and Ethan Hawkins and Garrett Regoli against CMR; and Lauren McCarter and Sierra Dilworth versus Great Falls High.

“We were missing some of our top girls,” Corrigan said.

“It will be good to get them back this week.

“Lauren McCarter stepped up to play No. 3 singles,” she added.

“She had a smile on her face the whole time. She was happy with how she played.

“It will be interesting to watch Delanie Long and Maisie Hansen (at No. 1 doubles). They hung in there. With a little more court sense, they will be winning some matches.”

For the boys ...

“Nick was hustling,” Corrigan said of Benz at No. 2 singles.

“He’s used to having a partner out there with him (in doubles). Today he had to do it all alone.

“Freshman Ethan Hawkins, playing No. 3 singles, will be fun to watch this season,” she added.

“He picked up some good experience today.”
