Flashy start for Flathead, Glacier

Flathead kicked off the track and field season with a bang, winning every boys event and 14 of 17 girls events at the season-opening triangular against Libby and Whitefish on Tuesday at Legends Stadium.

Andy Thomas won both the long and triple jumps and Michael Lee the shot put and discus for the Braves in the sweep of events. Lee posted a qualifying mark for the state meet in the discus, winning with a toss of 149 feet, 10 inches.

Hurdler Dawson Rinehart won the 110 hurdles and finished second in the 300 hurdles, while sprinter Hunter Dana won the 200 and finished second in the 100, Kyle Calles won the 800 and finished second in the 1,600 and Cole Gunderson won the 400 and finished second in the javelin.

Ben Perrin qualified for state while winning the 3,200 by more than a minute, posting a time of 9:52.15 and Micah Bucy posted a qualifying mark by winning the high jump with a height of 6-3.

Whitefish’s Lee Walkburn also qualified in the high jump finishing second with a height of 6-0.

On the girls side, Flathead’s Madde Boles qualified for state with a 5-2 high jump on a fantastic day at the track. Boles also won the 100 and 200.

Bravettes teammate Morgann Blanc won both the shot put and discus.

Libby’s Lauren Thorstenson swept the distances, winning the 1,600 and 3,200 while finishing second in the 800. She was one of two girls outside of Flathead to win at the meet, with Whitefish’s Kennedy Grove, who won the 100 hurdles.

Glacier-Sentinel Dual

The Glacier boys and girls shined at their home opener, showing off their depth in a dual win over Missoula Sentinel.

Drew Turner won both the 100 and 200 and Hunter Nicholson claimed a spot at the state meet with a qualifying mark of 6-3 to win the high jump as the Glacier boys beat Sentinel 80-65 in the dual.

The Wolfpack won nine of the 17 events, led by its sprinters and relay teams. Tyler Combs (400), Andrew Durado (300 hurdles), Tadan Gilman (shot put) and Kellen Bemis (discus) also won individual events.

Sentinel’s Marshall Beatty led the charge for the Spartans, winning the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 while setting a qualifying mark in the 1,600. Caden Ingraham won the triple jump with a state mark of 42-3 1/2.

The Glacier girls 11 of 17 events to top the Sentinel girls 84-61.

Wolfpack senior Nikki Krueger led the way, winning both the shot put and discus with state qualfying marks in a stacked field.

Each of the top three finishers in the shot put qualified for state. Sentinel’s top two throwers in the javelin also set state qualifying marks.

Glacier junior Annie Hill won the 800 with a state qualifying time of 2:17.65 to win the two-lap race by more than 30 seconds. Brynn McChesney was the only other multiple individual winner on the day, taking both the 100 hurdles and the long jump.
