Softball Sentinel, Big Sky top Glacier, Flathead
MISSOULA — Glacier showed some “grit” according to coach Andy Fors by bouncing back from a rough 13-1 loss to Missoula Sentinel to battle with Big Sky before the Eagles pulled out a 9-7 victory in Western AA softball play on Tuesday.
“I thought it was a positive we competed in the second game against a good pitcher and a good hitting team,” Fors said.
“Some kids stepped up and put the bat on the ball.”
Meg Hornby went 3 for 4 in that one and Alivia Atlee was 2 for 4.
“Addie Labrum doubled in the fourth inning to give us a spark and get things going,” Fors said.
Big Sky jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning and upped the advantage to 8-2 before Glacier stormed back to trail 8-7.
Big Sky added a solo home run in the sixth to end the scoring.
Glacier also fell behind early in the opener with Sentinel, 10-0 after two innings.
“We never responded,” Fors said of that contest.
Sentinel outhit Glacier 11-2. Erin McHugh and Atlee both doubled.
Glacier (0-4 overall, 0-2 league) hosts Helena Capital and Helena High on Saturday at noon and 2 p.m.

MISSOULA — Flathead was held to four runs in both Western AA setbacks.
A two-run fifth inning put Flathead on top 4-3, but Sentinel came right back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and added three more in the sixth.
Kylee Meredith, 2 for 3, tripled and homered for Flathead.
Big Sky had a pair of three-run innings and two four-run innings to best Flathead in five innings.
Kaycee Smith went 3 for 3 and homered for Flathead. She had two RBIs.
Flathead is back in action Saturday hosting Helena High and Helena Capital at noon and 2 p.m.

POLSON — A 12-run third inning carried Polson to an easy Class A nonconference victory over Corvallis.
Corvallis tallied five runs in the top of the third to get within one, trailing just 6-5.
“They got close, we responded strongly,” veteran Polson coach Larry Smith said. “We had a huge inning.”
Polson outhit Corvallis 24-5, nine of those were doubles — two each by Haley Fyant, Ashley Benson and Camas Renault. Kaelyn Smith, Quinn Motichka and Kaylanna Desjarlais also doubled.
Laurel Bitterman, 4 for 4, drove in five runs, along with Fyant, 3 for 5.
Smith, Benson and Hannah Fryberger also had three hits each.
Polson is back in action on Tuesday at home versus Frenchtown in a Northwest A contest.

BONNERS FERRY, Idaho — Khalyn Hageness checked Bonners Ferry on five hits and struck out 13 as Libby posted a nonconference victory.
Hageness also had a big game at the plate, going 3 for 5.
“She hit her spots,” Libby coach Dean Thompson said of his circle ace.
“They had a couple of good, hard hits off her.”
Jayden Winslow also went 3 for 5 for Libby.
Libby hosts Troy on Thursday in a Class B matchup at 6 p.m.
