Glacier boys, girls blank Billings West, Butte in AA soccer

HELENA — Glacier had six different players account for goals in boys soccer match victories on Saturday to open the season at the AA Jamboree.

Collin Kazmier and Connor Griffin accounted for the scoring in a 2-0 victory over Billings West.

Tyler Keller, Conner Heil (2), Rohit Tappeta and Dyllyn Stabler had goals in a 5-0 triumph over Butte.

Glacier outshot West 10-5 and Butte 17-4.

Andrew Lorenc and Logan Hill shared keeper duties for Glacier and both had two saves in each outing.

“They possessed the ball well, they were confident,” Glacier coach Ryan Billiet said.

“We had balanced play.”

Glacier opens Western AA play on Friday and Saturday hosting Helena Capital and Helena High.

Libby 0, Stevensville 0

LIBBY — Originally scheduled for Stevensville, the match was moved to Libby because of wildfire smoke in the Bitterroot Valley.

Both teams had scoring chances in the final half, but couldn’t capitalize.

Stevensville finished with nine shots on goal to eight for Libby.

Tyler Lucas had nine keeper saves for Libby.

Libby is back in action Friday at Belgrade and Saturday at Livingston.

GREAT FALLS — The Flathead boys, coming off their first winning season in eight years, start the 2017 fall campaign with two impressive nonconference victories.

Brandon Pyron, Hansen Eystad and Shane Rieke had goals for Flathead against Great Falls.

Rieke had the only goal against CMR.

“Great way to open season by shaking off the dust and cobwebs,” Flathead coach Nate Evans said.

“The guys went out and had fun, played great soccer and had a lot of chances.”

Flathead hosts Helena High and Helena Capital on Friday and Saturday to start Western AA action.

HELENA — Balanced scoring, defense and strong keeper play by Sophie Smith and Ellie Keller allowed Glacier to turn in a dominating performance at the AA Jamboree.

Cadie Williams had a hat trick — three goals — and assisted on another goal in the win over West.

Micah Hickethier, Taylor Brisedine and Maddie Becker had the other goals.

Williams, Becker (2), Hickethier, Anna Creer and Emily Cleveland scored goals in the win over Butte.

Smith had three keeper saves and Keller six against West. Keller had the lone save versus Butte.

Glacier outshot West 14-9 and Butte 27-3.

“Offense,” Glacier coach Brenden Byrd said of what propelled Glacier’s strong start in its season opener.

“Bigger for us was the shutout.

“I was surprised to see that many goals, but we possessed the ball so well it was only a matter of time before goals were found.”

Glacier starts Western AA play on Friday and Saturday hosting Helena Capital and Helena High.

GREAT FALLS — Flathead split its opening games of the season.

Flathead poured on three goals in the second half of its first matchup, topping Great Falls High 3-1. Sisters Skyleigh and Shayenn Thompson scored all three goals, helping the Bravettes to a 3-0 lead before a late goal put the Bison on the board.

Clara Vandenbosch scored both goals in a 3-2 loss to CMR in the second matchup.

Flathead hosts Helena High and Helena Capital on Friday and Saturday to start Western AA play.
