Wrestling Braves 2nd to Havre at Mining City Duals

BUTTE — Flathead finished second while Glacier ended its weekend on a high note at the 30th annual Mining City Duals Jim Street Wrestling Classic Tournament.

Flathead came up short against Havre, 31-28 in the championship match on Saturday.

It was the fifth straight Mining City Duals title for Havre.

Havre whipped Great Falls High 54-15 in the semifinals while Flathead slammed Missoula Sentinel 51-12.

The Braves were 3-1 in dual action on the final day and ended up 7-1 for the weekend.

“Havre just seems to own the Mining City Duals,” Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said.

“ We were way up, but they came storming back. We will hold our heads high and grow from this loss.

“Sometimes you win the close ones and sometimes you lose them,” Thompson continued.

“That’s life. We lost a couple of nail-biters, but we really seemed to improve over this tough weekend. To be the best you need to wrestle the best.

“Dominic Battello, Tucker Nadeau, Brendan Barnes and Payton Hume all wrestled amazing against Havre,” Thompson added.

“Tanner Russell lost a close one to a 3-time state champion. I’m very proud of this team’s effort.”

Glacier finished up by winning two consolation matches on Saturday — 45-22 over Helena High and 41-35 over Helena Capital.

The Wolfpack lost its first two matches on Friday in pool action before winning the finale.

Glacier went 3-2 in Butte.

“It’s always nice to get a couple AA wins, especially to avenge last week’s close loss to Helena High,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said.

“Its exciting to see some of the guys starting to have breakthroughs. I think we have some other guys that are right on the cusp of finding that success as well.

“We are looking forward to next week having our 170 pounder ready to wrestle and giving it a go at our first individual tournament of the year at the CMR Holiday Classic.”

Great Falls High nipped Missoula Sentinel 35-33 to finish third.

Also competing were Columbia Falls, Polson and Ronan.
