MatCats' Windauer, McPhee 4th at CMR event
GREAT FALLS — Ben Windauer of Columbia Falls settled for fourth place at 170 pounds at the Great Falls C.M. Russell Holiday Classic wrestling tournament on Saturday.
Windauer lost a tough 3-2 decision to Jacob Fritzler of Billings Senior in the semifinals, but bounced back to pin Brig Johnston of Bozeman in the consolation semifinals in 1:34.
Then in the third/fourth place match, Windauer was pinned by Brock Bushfield of Billings Skyview in 1:46.
Also placing fourth for the Columbia Falls MatCats was Colten McPhee at 182. He was pinned in the quarterfinals, but won by major decision in the consolation semifinals over Nelson Crisafulli of Glendive 14-6. In the battle for third/fourth, McPhee lost to Shane Gibson of Livingston by decision, 3-1 in overtime.
Ronan’s Hunter Peterson was a runner-up, losing in the finals at 138 to Jackson Currier of Colstrip by major decision, 15-4. Peterson decisioned Kai Stewart of C.M. Russell in the semifinals, 11-7.
Placing fifth were Ronan’s Trapper McAllister (103), Spencer Stagg (120) and Noah Cheff (132) while teammate Owen Brown (126) was sixth.
Finishing sixth were Jakob Freeman (205) of Columbia Falls and Tremayne Krause (285) of Glacier.
On the team front, Ronan was 10th with 110 points. Columbia Falls, 104.5, was 12th and Glacier, 67, 21st.
“I’m really happy for Tre,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said of Krause.
“He put in a good fall of wrestling and it is paying off for him after his last two seasons were cut short by injury. Tre and Ashton (Thompson) have been really pushing themselves in the room with the help of our new heavyweight coach Trever Hass, a two-time state high school champ from Butte. It is a great combo.”
