Avery, Mee in hunt at State Women's Am

LAUREL — Kalispell’s Teigan Avery birdied the final hole of the first round at the Montana State Women’s Amateur golf tournament to edge into second place, one stroke back of the lead after Thursday’s play at the Laurel Golf Club.
Avery, a sophomore at the University of Montana, steadied down the stretch, shooting par on three straight holes before closing with a four on the par-5 18th to finish the first round at 4-over-par 76.
She’s one stroke behind Park City’s Kyla Clancy after the opening day, with Libby’s Jackie Mee in third at 5-over. Mee birdied two of her final six holes.
Polson’s Kaycee Kennedy, the only other local participant, shot 23-over-par and will start the second round near the back of the field.
Libby’s Bobbie Lacklen is within shooting distance at the State Women’s Senior Am, also held at Laurel Golf Club. Lacklen is in fourth place after an 11-over first round, sitting four strokes back of Laurel’s Sue Matson. Whitefish’s Karen Jacobson is tied for fifth at 14-over.
Defending men’s State Am champion Ryan Porch turned pro earlier this year, taking his name out of the hat for this year’s competition at Missoula Country Club.
Whitefish’s Shawn Tucker is tied for eighth after Thursday’s first round, firing a 1-over 72. He is five strokes back of Billings’ Joey Moore, a senior at Billings West High School who also won the Fourth of July Tournament in Whitefish earlier this summer, and Kremlin’s Jordy Donoven, who each shot 4-under-par in the first round.
Whitefish’s Mark Mance is in a tie for 15th at 3-over and Bigfork’s Joseph Potkonjak is tied for 18th at 4-over.
