Dist. A: Lakers overcome errors, rally by Mavs 9-6

WHITEFISH — Seems hard to imagine winning a baseball game while committing 10 errors, but the Kalispell Lakers did just that Thursday afternoon during first-round action at the West District A American Legion tournament at Memorial Field.

Kalispell rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to pull out a 9-6 victory over the Missoula Mavs.

“It wasn’t pretty on either side defensively,” Lakers coach Jesse McFarland said.

“Our kids kept battling.”

Missoula had four errors.

Tied at 6-all going into the seventh, Kalispell’s Brandon Jordan singled to left to score Logan Siblerud.

Pinch-hitter Adam Joy then singled to right on a two-strike, two-out pitch to drive in Jonathan Craver and Jordan to complete the scoring.

Kalispell and Missoula played twice during the regular season with both teams winning once.

“The pitching was fantastic,” McFarland said.

“We threw three guys, they were all great.”

Ryan McDonald pitched two innings, Evan Todd came in for three and Siblerud finished up the final two. The trio held Missoula to three singles. Todd and Siblerud both had three strikeouts and McDonald two.

Kalispell is back in action tonight at 7 versus the Glacier Twins (37-14).

Twins 13, Mariners 3

WHITEFISH — The Glacier Twins used a seven-run second inning to get the ball rolling and piled on four more runs in the sixth to make quick work of the Mission Valley Mariners in the final game on the first day of the tournament.

Glacier, the second seed, had 13 hits, led by the bottom of the order with Gunner Marsh and Terek Bistodeau both going 3 for 4. Marsh scored three times and Bistodeau twice.

Tom Hellwig, 1 for 3, drove in three runs for the Twins.

Ryan Veneman, 2 for 5, and Coby Clark-Dickenson, 2 for 4, both drove in two runs and doubled.

Veneman, Nathan Hader and Forrest Kobelt shared mound duties. They held Mission Valley to four hits.

Glacier (37-14) advances to play Kalispell tonight at 7 p.m.

In loser-out action today at 1 p.m., Mission Valley faces the Missoula Mavs.

WHITEFISH — An early 5-1 lead for the Libby Loggers didn’t hold up as the Bitterroot Bucs rallied for the first-round win.

Bitterroot scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 7-5 advantage and added nine more in the fifth to close out the Loggers.

Libby outhit the Bucs 12-10 and every Loggers registered a hit. Brady Bateman, Raul Rodriquez and Ty Bateman were all 2 for 3. Seth Bateman had two RBIs for the Loggers.

“We had a good start, just too many free passes,” Libby coach Kelly Morford said of the seven walks by three of his pitchers.

“They had a few timely hits on top of it. It was too much for us to overcome.”

Libby is back in action today at 9 a.m. in loser-out play versus the Cranbrook Bandits. Libby was 4-0 versus Cranbrook during the regular season.

“I think we’re still in pretty good shape,” Morford said.

“I think we can still make a run.”

WHITEFISH — Top-seed Bitterroot Red Sox slipped by the Cranbrook Bandits in first-round play.

The Red Sox play the Bitterroot Bucs today at 4 p.m.

The top two teams advance to state play July 27th in Three Forks.
