Circus coming to downtown Somers

| June 8, 2017 2:00 AM

Somers Company Town Project will host the Culpepper and Merriweather Circus for two performances on Sunday, June 25.

A pair of 90-minute shows under the big top are scheduled for 2 and 4:30 p.m. across from the post office on Somers Road. Presale tickets are $7 for children and $10 for adults. Those prices rise to $8 and $13, respectively, on the day of the show. Presale tickets can be purchased at Sliters locations in Bigfork, Somers and Lakeside, at the Somers Bay Café and at the Somers Company Town Museum. Presale tickets can also be reserved by calling 866-244-8676.

Between 9:30 and 10 a.m. on the day of the circus, the public is invited to attend a tent raising and free tour of the circus grounds to learn about the history of the show, the animals and performers.

THE CULPEPPER and Merriweather Circus, from Hugo, Oklahoma, is now in its 32nd season and has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and in the A&E network special “Under the Big Top.”

The Sunday morning tent raising is a unique chance for families, schools and interested community members to meet and learn about the Culpepper and Merriweather Circus family. It includes a walking tour of the circus grounds. Attendees will learn interesting facts about the performers, the history of the show and the different species of animals involved in the show. The presentation will also address topics like the hygiene, grooming and the veterinary care all the animals receive.

This year’s circus lineup includes performers and entertainers like Miss Simone and her single trapeze, Miss Paulina’s proud “Big and Little” prancing ponies, the Arlise Troupe on their unicycles, Natalie’s American Eskimo Escapades, Miss Georgia displaying flexibility to the extreme and, for the first time, the Wheel of Destiny and tight rope from the Perez Family. Performing jungle cats Soloman, Delilah and Francis, presented by Mr. Trey Key, are also part of the show. Circus acts are accompanied by original music from Matt Margucci.
