ATP Kids spring session features 'Sister Act'

| March 2, 2017 2:00 AM

ATP Kids, the educational outreach program offered by Whitefish’s Alpine Theatre Co., is auditioning for the stage production of the hit movie “Sister Act,” Monday, March 6 at 4 p.m. at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center.

The program Students will be given material to sing at the audition, which is open to any Flathead Valley student age 13 to 18.

The auditions are part of ATP Kids’ spring session, with intensive rehearsals and classes beginning March 13. Those rehearsals will be held five days a week from 4 to 6 p.m., with performances April 28 through 30.

“SISTER ACT” is a feel-good comedy performance based on the 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg. Original music for the stage version was composed by Tony and Oscar-winner Alan Menken, and the musical was nominated for five Tony awards, including best musical.

In “Sister Act,” disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder and is put into protective custody in the one place the police believe she won’t be found: a convent. Using her unique moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Van Cartier breathes new life into the church and community.

ATP KIDS is taught by theater professionals, including Broadway veterans, and bills itself as a way for local students to gain confidence, creativity, self-discipline and camaraderie with other valley youngsters, all while learning to perform on stage. A $120 tuition is charged to cover the cost of the program, and scholarships are available for families who require assistance. No student is ever turned away. Since its founding in 2008, ATP Kids has enrolled more than 1,100 local students.
