The Browns made a trade Thursday to take on Houston Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler’s $16 million salary and pick up a 2018 second-round draft pick, a person familiar with the move confirmed.

ESPN first reported the move.

The Browns also swapped a fourth-round pick this year for a 2017 sixth-round selection from the Texans.

The Texans saved $16 million in cash and $10 million in salary-cap space with the trade and want to pursue former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

The Browns are not committed to keeping Osweiler and are likely to try to trade him, according to the ESPN report.

The deal is being hailed as one of the most creative in NFL history. NBA teams make trades to get them off their books, but it’s far from the norm in the NFL.
