Whitefish considers boat canopy request

The Whitefish City Council has an unusually light agenda tonight, with a lakeshore permit request topping the order of business.

Randy Dunlop is asking for a lakeshore variance to impervious coverage rules so he can install a boat canopy above a permitted boat lift adjacent to a permitted dock at 736 Birch Point Drive.

He proposes exceeding the constructed area allowed, based on lakeshore frontage, by more than 77 square feet.

Both the city planning staff and Whitefish Lake and Lakeshore Protection Committee have recommended the permit be denied because it doesn’t comply with criteria outlined in the lakeshore regulations. The applicant has other alternatives available, and granting the variance would not result in a general or universal public benefit, planner Bailey Minnich wrote in her report to the council.

The council will consider a resolution declaring certain city-owned items to be unneeded and obsolete. The resolution authorizes the disposal of the items.

The city will hold a surplus property auction on May 24 at 1005 Baker Ave., the interim City Hall, to sell off a variety of items that won’t be moved to the new City Hall. The auction tentatively will begin at 5:30 p.m.

City Finance Director Dana Smith will give a third-quarter financial review.

The meeting begins at 7:10 p.m. at 1005 Baker Ave.
