Whitefish, Polson division net champs

The Daily Inter Lake

POLSON — Whitefish finally ended Polson’s grip on the girls Northwestern A divisional tennis championship Thursday afternoon.

Whitefish finished 3-4 in singles and 2-3 in doubles to pile up a 52-point total to capture the crown.

Polson, 40 points, was second.

The Pirates had won 10 straight titles.

“A very impressive streak indeed,” Whitefish coach Patrick Dryden said of Polson’s run.

“Tip our hats to Polson and the former Lady Pirates for a job well done.”

Dryden led Whitefish to its last divisional championship in 2006.

Hannah Madsen defeated Paint Intasuk 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 in an all-Whitefish girls consolation final.

Polson’s Cassie Carlyle defeated Molly Schmit of Columbia Falls in the final 6-2, 6-0.

Polson’s Olivia Hewston and Kyler Lundeen topped Whitefish’s Paige Sproul and Cailyn Ross in the double finals 6-1, 6-2.

Whitefish’s Holly Hileman and Melissa Pollard dropped Shelby Spokas and Jackie Westman of Stevensville in the consolation finals 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

“We knew it would be difficult (to beat Polson) with the top of their lineup so strong,” Dryden said.

“The turning point for us was Paige Sproul and Cailyn Ross winning in the semifinals. They lost to those girls (Spokas and Westman) earlier (in the season). Getting them in the championship turned things around.”

Dryden said all 10 members of his team scored at least three points.

“We got contributions from everyone,” he said.

Columbia Falls, 20, was third and Stevensville, 14, fourth.

Polson pulled through to capture the boys team title, however, with an impressive 61 team total.

The Pirates finished 1-3-4 in doubles and 2-4 in singles.

Whitefish, 46, was second, Columbia Falls, 17, third and Stevensville, 4, fourth.

Matt Sitter and Cadis Chowning of Polson beat Brenden Buls and Thomas Carloss of Whitefish in the doubles finals 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

“I think that was their first loss of the season,” Polson coach Bob Hislop said of Buls and Carloss.

“They are a real solid doubles team. (Sitter and Chowning) had to come from behind and figure out how to do (win) it.”

In an all-Polson consolation doubles final, Jaron Morgan and Kaiden Forman-Webster defeated Kabe Forman-Webster and Carson McDaniel 7-5, 6-2.

Whitefish’s Eric Holdhusen outlasted Colin Kenney of Polson 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in a wild singles final.

“He was down 2-5 in the third and came all the way back,” Hislop said of Kenney.

“It went to a tie-breaker and Eric won it.”

Whitefish’s Ethan Potthoff bested Polson’s Johnny Moore in the consolation final 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Polson’s last divisional title was in 2014.

Up next is the Class A state tournament next week at Flathead Valley Community College Courts.
