Wolfpack doubles back for another bite
Glacier seniors Anna Cecil and Maya Buckingham are back in the semifinals at the Class AA state tennis tournament, and have a chance to avenge a familiar foe to get to the finals.
Cecil and Buckingham teamed up to top Bozeman’s Hannah Hays and Brooklyn Mailey 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals on Thursday at Flathead Valley Community College. The Bozeman pair knocked Cecil and Buckingham out of last season’s tournament.
“It was a rough match but I think we played well,” Cecil said.
“We managed to pull through in the tiebreak and got our attitude more positive. I think we’ve done really well. I think we’ve been playing better today than we have the entire year.”
The Glacier duo will face another familiar foe in the semifinals this morning, Missoula Sentinel’s Hannah Worden and Peyton Finch, for a chance to play in the final.
Worden is half of the state championship team that beat Cecil and Buckingham in the semifinals last season. The teams have played close matches this season, including a tiebreak in the first meeting.
Cecil and Buckingham are the only Wolfpack players to advance to the final day after starting the tournament with the most entries.
Wolfpack boys singles player Holland Blalack, the Northern division champion, was upset in three sets in the first round and again in loser-out play.
Girls singles player McKenna Tinseth lost in the first round to top-seeded Katie Hooten of Billings Skyview and won in her first match of the loser-out bracket, only to lose in the second match.
All three boys doubles teams and the other two girls doubles teams lost in the first round. Tyler Keller and Kyle Buckingham won in three sets to advance to a third match on the day but lost to top-seeded Jordan Gibbs and Jayden Ostler of Billings West after that pair had been upset in the quarterfinals.
Bozeman has the advantage to repeat for both the boys and girls titles.
The Hawks have two boys and one girl in the singles semifinals and two boys teams in the doubles semifinals.
Billings Senior and Missoula Sentinel are challenging for the boys and girls titles with each team in second place after the first day.
Play concludes today with matches starting at 8 a.m. and championship matches scheduled for 1 p.m.
