Wolfpack upsets Capital

HELENA — Glacier picked apart the state’s top defense all game, holding off several rallies to beat Helena Capital 30-27 in a Class AA football game on Friday night at Vigilante Stadium.
It was a terrible start for the Wolfpack (3-4), resembling the poor stretches it had in its winless start to the season. Glacier’s first two possessions ended in turnovers and they turned the ball over on downs on their third. The first turnover was inside the Capital 5-yard line and the second led directly to points on a short field, with the Bruins taking a 6-0 lead.
But the Glacier special teams helped turn the tide. The unit, much maligned through the first six games, got a safety on a Capital punt to get Glacier its first points. The Wolfpack took the lead on the ensuing drive on a pass from Evan Todd to Mark Estes and took a 9-6 lead into halftime.
Glacier blocked the first Capital punt of the second half and struck one play later on a 22-yard pass from Todd to Drew Deck to build a 10-point lead.
The Bruins (6-2) kept answering, cutting the lead to three points three times, but Glacier kept pulling away, with two touchdowns from Drew Turner in the second half to hold on to the victory.
The win keeps playoff hopes alive for the Wolfpack. With losses from Bozeman (3-5) and CMR (3-5) on Friday, Glacier moved, at least temporarily into the eight seed. Glacier can almost seal up a playoff seed with a win at Missoula Big Sky (6-2) next week.
