Bigfork's Morley takes third straight state title
HELENA — For the third year in a row, no one could touch Bryn Morley.
The Bigfork senior capped a magnificent high school cross country career with her third consecutive individual Class B girls state championship on Saturday at Bill Roberts Golf Course, running the 5K in 18 minutes, 30 seconds to beat her nearest competition by more than a minute and 20 seconds.
Polson’s Beatrix Frissell took the individual Class A girls crown in 19:15, and the Glacier boys and Bigfork girls each placed second, the highest team finishes in the area.
Morley and teammate Anya Young took first and second among Class B girls, and Alicia Kalenak wasn’t far behind in seventh place to lead the Pirates to a second consecutive runner-up finish as a team. Manhattan won its second consecutive team championship in a landslide.
At the Class AA level, the Glacier boys surprised with a second-place finish behind dominant Bozeman, which took the boys and girls team titles by large margins.
Aren Alexander-Battee and Simon Hill led the Wolfpack with ninth- and 10th-place finishes, respectively. Flathead’s Ben Perrin was the top junior finisher among Class AA boys, crossing in 16:18 for sixth place.
Glacier senior Annie Hill rebounded from a seventh-place finish in 2016 to place third in 18:09, 41 seconds behind the winner — Bozeman’s Camila Noe.
Flathead senior Kaitlin Wride also captured all-state honors with a ninth-place finish,
Polson’s Naima Crowl crossed the finish line 36 seconds and two places behind Frissell, and teammate Molly Sitter managed all-state honors with a 14th-place finish to put the Polson girls on the podium in third. The Whitefish girls just missed out on the podium, placing fourth behind Ella Greenberg, who was ninth individually.
Like the Polson girls, the Columbia Falls boys snuck onto the podium with a third-place finish behind strong performances by Gabe Knudsen (fourth individually) and Joe Lamb (11th individually).
Polson’s Quin Stewart finished seventh and was the only other area runner to garner all-state honors in Class A boys.
Eureka placed two runners on the Class B all-state teams, as Mckay Guckenberg finished ninth among girls and Alex Lowe was 11th in the boys race.
